Panel to Panel

Panel to Panel

Panel to Panel links within a server room or datacentre are nothing new.  They allow you to patch locally within different rack spaces, utilising fixed terminated copper or fibre cabling. You can then easily connect equipment with short patch cables, without the need for running long patch cables under, over or through multiple IT racking.

These panel to panel links can be a combination of Cat6, Cat6a, Singlemode and Multimode fibre depending on the installed equipment and the future connectivity that’s required.

It’s common for these patch panels to link back to a single or number of main patching frames, however it’s also not unusual for panel to panel links to also be installed across an array of racks depending on the applications and systems involved.

If you have the luxury of a new installation then planning this in advance, as part of an office refit or Datacentre build is ideal as this will in turn save costs and eliminate future disruption.  Both fibre and copper cabling can be pulled in to place, terminated and tested before a facility goes live. However, this is not always possible and when moves and changes are required in a live environment we need to consider a much more flexible solution.

This can be achieved by installing a modular cassette based fibre solution, with Single or Multimode LC connections and an MTP connections at the rear of each cassette.  The Chassis can either be a 1U format that holds 5x cassettes or a 2U option for up to 12 cassettes which is ideal for high density fibre patching fields. At the rear of a 24 fibre (12x duplex) cassette will be 2x MTP ports, each catering for 12 fibre cores.

A key benefit of using MTP over traditional/fixed pre terms is that it’s extremely lightweight and therefore easy to handle – not much thicker than a standard fibre patch cable.  You don’t require any termination tools so can quickly run the desired length of single or multimode fibre cable between the two locations and plug each end in to the rear of the cassette.  Seen as the cassettes are modular you can redeploy them to other locations without the need for expensive splicing from external contractors.  Additional fibre cassettes can be added as required, quickly creating a 10Gigabit fibre backbone for ever increasing bandwidth requirements.

Our cassette solutions are quick and easy to install and if the need arises for Cat6a, then a 4 Port shielded cassette (20 port in a 1U space) can be added along with legacy SC cassettes for a fully scalable solution.  You can quickly create a low cost bespoke and scalable solution that will grow with your business in an easy to implement high density format.

Patch Solutions can offer a fully technical design including an on-site measuring service.  Once agreed, we will build up the solution and deliver next day with all ports pre-labelled ready for immediate installation.
